Pagasa launches mobile app for easier access to weather info

THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Monday launched a mobile application that will provide real-time weather data.

Nathaniel Servando, Pagasa chief, said in a press conference that through "PANaHON," or the Pagasa National Hydro-Meteorological Observing Network, “users can receive timely notifications directly on their mobile device including tropical cyclone bulletins, thunderstorm and heavy rainfall warnings, and flood advisories.” With the app's location feature, alerts are received relevant to the areas of interest, according to the national weather bureau.

“Hourly forecasts and five-day weather outlook feature would allow users to check the latest weather in their pinned locations and so they can plan and decide ahead,” Servando said.

Top Pagasa officials also led the observance of the Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week from June 14 to 20, with a call for better preparedness against hazards brought by storms and other extreme weather events.

“At the same time, let us stay informed about evolving climate conditions and new digital innovations that support resilience,” Servando said.

This year’s theme "Bagyo, Baha, Maghanda Tayo!" (Storms and Floods, Let’s Get Ready!) highlights the importance of science-based preparedness, early warning systems, and community action in reducing disaster risks amid a changing climate, the weather agency said.

Aside from a series of seminars on community-based typhoon and flood preparedness, Pagasa will launch information campaigns on social media that promote greater understanding of weather and climate hazards and appropriate preparedness measures.
