MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau is monitoring two low-pressure areas (LPAs) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), with one having a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
In its 5 a.m. weather advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that one of the LPAs was last spotted at 1,835 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and has a low chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
Weather forecaster Veronica Torres said that it could enter PAR, although a landfall scenario remained unlikely. Its possible approach toward the Bicol-Aurora area, however, would still need to be monitored.
“Although for now, the chance of a landfall scenario is low, we are not ruling out the possibility that it might approach the Bicol and Aurora areas,” Torres said in Filipino and English.
Pagasa said that another LPA was last seen about 990 kilometers west of southwestern Luzon. It has a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours but is not expected to enter PAR or directly affect the country.
According to Torres, the second LPA's trough, or extension, is affecting western parts of Northern Luzon, while the southwest monsoon, or habagat, continues to affect Central and Southern Luzon.
Pagasa forecasts cloudy skies and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Isabela, Quirino and Nueva Vizcaya.
Pagasa said habagat would bring rains over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and the Bicol Region.
Fair weather will generally prevail over Visayas and Mindanao, according to Pagasa, although localized thunderstorms remain possible.
The weather bureau said no gale warning was currently in effect over any coastal waters of the Philippines.
