Philippine Migrant Workers Agency Checks Welfare of OFW Seafarers

MANILA — The Philippines’ Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has stepped up efforts to monitor the welfare of overseas Filipino workers in Romania after its secretary met with more than 200 Filipino shipyard workers to discuss their working and living conditions.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac held a town hall meeting with Filipino pipe fitters, steel fitters and welders employed by VARD Shipyards Romania S.A., according to a Facebook post by the agency dated August 6.

The meeting gave the workers an opportunity to raise concerns relating to their employment and welfare, with Cacdac assuring them that the department would work with relevant agencies and the employer to address the issues raised.

“The protection of every overseas Filipino worker remains our highest priority. We are here to listen to your concerns and to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that your rights and welfare are upheld,” Cacdac said.

The DMW said follow-up efforts would involve the Philippine Embassy in Bucharest, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, the licensed Philippine recruitment agency and VARD Shipyards Romania S.A.

As part of the visit, Cacdac and the DMW delegation also inspected the workers’ accommodation to assess their living conditions.

The delegation found the accommodation to be well maintained, with reliable Wi-Fi and functioning air-conditioning units. The facility was also located within walking distance of the shipyard, allowing workers easier access to their workplace.

The engagement forms part of the DMW’s continuing efforts to monitor Filipino workers overseas and strengthen coordination between migrant workers, employers, recruitment agencies and Philippine government institutions.

The department said the initiative supports the Marcos administration’s commitment to protecting the rights, welfare and well-being of overseas Filipino workers through responsive government services.
