Police sergeant fined RM5,000 for attempting to obtain cash from suspect

Kota Kinabalu: A police sergeant was fined RM5,000, in default six months’ jail, by the Sessions Court here on Wednesday for attempting to obtain RM2,000 from a suspected habitual drug offender.

Sessions Court Judge Andi Razalijaya A Dadi meted out the sentence to 42-year-old Zakaria Mohd Jasni after he pleaded guilty to an alternative charge under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

Zakaria had attempted to obtain the money, which was banked into another individual's account, while knowing the matter was connected to his official duties in Kudat.

He committed the offence at 12.20pm on June 18, 2021 at Fook Soon Seafood Product Sdn Bhd in Kudat.

Counsel Luke Ressa Balang appealed for leniency on the grounds that Zakaria was remorseful and had three children to support, while Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuting officer Norsham Saharom urged the court to pass a deterrent sentence.
