A former rugby player in Sabah who is accused of murdering his younger sister has been found to be mentally fit to stand trial, according to the court. The Magistrate, Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali, was informed that Arden Mattson Maturin does not suffer from any mental illness.
The information was based on an observation conducted at the Hospital Mesra, Bukit Padang. Deputy Public Prosecutor Jessica Ombou Kakayun presented a psychiatric report during the court hearing and requested additional time to gather further reports, including chemist, pathology, and post-mortem reports.
The next mention date was set for September 27. Earlier this year, on May 23, Arden's counsels successfully applied for him to be sent to Hospital Mesra for a mental assessment. The accused is charged with murdering his sister, Audrey Maturin, at their residence in Taman Prestij off Jalan Signal Hill. He is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty if convicted. Arden was represented by counsel Jul Hamri and Faustina Tulus.
In a separate court case, a cook named Arip Muktar was charged with murder when he allegedly strangled his wife to death. Arip, an undocumented individual, appeared before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles, who did not take a plea. The incident is said to have occurred on April 18 between 5 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. at a worker's quarters in Jalan Pantai.
The court scheduled a mention for September 21, and Arip will remain in custody until then. Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik handled the prosecution. According to reports, after allegedly strangling his wife during a heated argument, Arip attempted to take his own life by slashing his throat. A neighbour, who had heard the couple arguing earlier, discovered the woman's body and her husband lying on the floor. Both Arip and his wife were undocumented individuals. In both cases, the court will continue to hear the evidence and make decisions based on the presented reports and testimonies.
The accused individuals will remain in custody until the legal proceedings are resolved. The cases highlight the tragic nature of domestic violence and the importance of addressing mental health issues within society. Authorities must thoroughly investigate these incidents and provide justice for the victims and their families.
