Prince Harry’s surprise NBA Finals appearance became part of the show in San Antonio when a courtside exchange with Spike Lee briefly turned awkward.
The Duke of Sussex was at Frost Bank Center for Game 5 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, a night that ended with New York winning 94-90 and clinching its first championship since 1973. The game already had enough drama, but one celebrity interaction still managed to travel fast online.
That is because Harry and Lee gave cameras a moment that looked confusing at first glance. It was not hostile, but it had the kind of awkward timing social media loves.

Prince Harry Spike Lee handshake turns awkward during Knicks Spurs Finals
NY Post Sports showed Prince Harry and Spike Lee speaking during Knicks-Spurs Game 5, with the courtside exchange quickly becoming its own talking point.
Reports described Lee leaning down to speak to Harry as the prince moved through the seating area. Harry appeared to stop and offer a handshake, only for the timing to misfire before Lee eventually returned the gesture.
The awkwardness came from that brief pause. Harry also appeared to place his hand near Lee’s stomach during the exchange, which made the clip look stranger than a normal courtside greeting.
Still, the moment did not appear tense. The two continued talking afterward, and the interaction seemed more like a clumsy courtside meeting than any real snub.
Spike Lee presence made Knicks championship night feel more New York
Lee’s presence mattered because he is not just another famous face at a Finals game. He has been one of the Knicks’ defining celebrity supporters for decades, carrying his fandom through years when nights like this felt impossible.
That made Game 5 a massive personal moment for him. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 45 points, Victor Wembanyama had 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, and New York closed the series 4-1 on San Antonio’s floor.
Harry’s appearance added another layer because it was unexpected. He was in Texas around the Warrior Games and attended the Finals with U.S. Army veteran JP Lane, while Meghan and their children were not reported to be present.
The funny part is that the handshake probably would have disappeared on any other night. But this was the Knicks ending a 53-year wait, Lee was courtside, Harry was nearby, and cameras caught the whole thing.
In the end, the exchange was awkward rather than dramatic. On a night built for Knicks history, even a mistimed handshake found its way into the Finals story.
