Probe of Taguig ‘ghost’ flood projects urged

A GROUP of citizens in Taguig City called for an investigation into “ghost” flood control projects worth P2.8 billion in the city.

The newly formed Nagkakaisang Damdamin ng Mamamayan Laban sa Korapsyon (Nadamako) urged the Senate, Office of the Ombudsman, and Department of Public Works and Highways to investigate what it described as questionable projects.

The group claimed that some projects existed only on paper, while others involved unauthorized reclamation along C-6 and 42 projects whose terms of bidding, implementation and cost are highly anomalous.

Funds intended to protect residents from flooding should not be used for projects to benefit private interests, Nadamako said.

“We will not allow the people’s money, which should be used for flood protection, to end up in the pockets of a few,” Nadamako convenor Jun Menia said.

“What should be a barrier against water is being used as filling material for C-6,” Menia said.

The group’s call came as Sen. Panfilo Lacson continues to investigate anomalous flood control projects in Taguig, including nonexistent projects and alleged illegal reclamation along Laguna Lake.

Nadamako thanked Lacson for bringing the irregularities to public attention, and said it would continue pressing authorities to establish accountability.

The group also announced plans for prayer vigils, campus activities, candle-lighting events and community forums as part of its campaign against corruption.
