- Ashley Malcolm, 40, has been sentenced at the Old Bailey to 18 years in prison with an extended five-year licence after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of 86-year-old John Burke in Hackney, north London.
- During a burglary in September 2025, Malcolm headbutted Mr Burke while the frail pensioner attempted to protect his 91-year-old wife, causing a fractured nose and fatal intracranial bleeding.
- Following the attack, Malcolm targeted a nearby residential care home and attempted to break into another flat, where he assaulted a resident using a bicycle pump.
- Mr Burke was initially discharged from Homerton Hospital after a radiologist failed to spot his brain bleed, but he was found unconscious by his son the next day and subsequently died from irreversible brain injuries.
- Judge Simon Mayo KC highlighted Malcolm's extensive 20-year criminal history, which includes 12 previous burglary convictions and 10 assaults, as a substantial aggravating factor in the sentencing.
