Kota Kinabalu: The privileges and uniqueness of multi-racial, ethnic and cultural communities in this country, especially in Sabah, must continue to be preserved and defended, said the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor.
He said the factor is an important element in fostering a sense of respect and accepting diversity as a strength that contributes to the State’s economic growth, political stability and the well-being of the people.
According to him, “Culture is an important aspect in our lives that is the identity of a nation and ethnicity that must be preserved and dignified for the benefit of all.”
“Modernisation and progress should not prevent the people from appreciating and strengthening the culture practised by multiracial communities, including aspects of cultural dance.
“Many good things can be learned from culture such as unity, sustainability of lifestyle, protection of natural resources and conservation of indigenous culture,” Hajiji said at the 32nd National Level Chinese Dance Festival and the 21st School Level Chinese Dance Competition at Kian Kok High School Hall, Thursday night.
Hajiji’s speech text was read by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Christina Liew.
He said Sabah, which is rich in culture from 35 ethnicities and 217 sub-ethnicities, is a state treasure that is very valuable to continue to be defended in order to increase unity, in addition to being a source of the State’s economy through the tourism industry, the creative arts industry, including community-based small and medium-sized industries.
According to him, Chinese Dance is an art that expresses inner emotions through body language and presents beautiful images and a good dance performance will bring inspiration, increase the value and level of humanity.
Through the activity, Hajiji hoped that it could unearth more dance talents that would contribute to the long-term development of Chinese cultural endeavours.
“Thus, organising this festival can help highlight the cultural diversity in Sabah, not only for the people of this State, but also for tourists from within and outside the country.
“I believe the festival is also able to promote the culture of the Chinese community, thus attracting more visitors to this country, especially to Sabah”, he said. Hajiji also wants the Chinese community and enthusiasts of cultural dance to give full support to the activity because dance is a source of developing intelligence and fostering creativity, besides being able to prevent young people from unhealthy activities.
