SUBANG JAYA: The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) has urged the public not to panic-buy food ahead of the Northeast Monsoon, assuring them that supplies at evacuation centres are sufficient.

Its director-general, Datuk Meor Ismail Meor Akim, said households should purchase food and drinks according to their needs rather than react to alarming reports or social media posts that could trigger unnecessary panic.

“Just buy what you need. There is no need to stockpile food or make unnecessary purchases.

“InsyaAllah, food supplies will be sufficient,” he said at a press conference during the Media Engagement Session on Government Preparedness for the 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon (MTL) here today.

He advised residents to take basic precautions by keeping important belongings and documents in elevated areas, particularly on the upper floors of double-storey homes, to protect them from flood damage.

Meor said evacuation centres were being prepared and urged the public to rely on verified information from the authorities instead of unsubstantiated reports circulating online.

He also called on the media to help counter misleading content, particularly videos shared by social media influencers that could cause unnecessary alarm.

“I remember one incident involving an area I was familiar with. I knew the situation there, so I contacted the relevant district office and asked them to check.

“It turned out the video was misleading and had been made just to attract followers,” he said.

Meor urged the public and media practitioners to verify information before sharing it, warning that misleading content could fuel panic and lead to unnecessary purchases.
