LAHAD DATU: A female Borneo pygmy elephant was found dead in an oil palm plantation at Jalan Silam, here, on Friday.

Sabah Wildlife Department Director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said the carcass was found by the plantation supervisor while doing his rounds at 10.20am.

He said the carcass was discovered at Block 57, Felcra Berhad Estate Danum area.

Preliminary investigation found that the carcass was inside the Lembah Danum Forest Reserve.

“Initial inspection on the location found no foul play such as external injury, bullet shell or shot wound.

“The elephant was believed to be dead about one of two days prior to the discovery. However, the cause of death was yet to be concluded,” he said.

According to Mohd Soffian, further operation with the post-mortem team will be conducted on Saturday to obtain samples for lab analysis.

The case has been classified as Refer to Other Agency (ROA) and handed over to the Lahad Datu Wildlife Department for further action.
