LAHAD DATU: A female Borneo pygmy elephant was found dead in an oil palm plantation along Jalan Silam on Friday morning.

The carcass was discovered by a plantation supervisor during his routine round at about 10.20am within Block 57 of the FELCRA Berhad Estate Danum area.

A preliminary check showed the animal’s body lay inside the Lembah Danum Forest Reserve, with no signs of foul play such as injuries or gunshot wounds.

Wildlife officers estimated the elephant had died one or two days earlier, though the cause of death has yet to be determined pending a post-mortem.

The case has been referred to the Lahad Datu Wildlife Department for further investigation and laboratory analysis.
