
MANILA, Philippines - The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has issued red and yellow alerts for the Visayas grid on Tuesday as some major power plants went offline after the repair of other facilities.
The red alert was between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., while the yellow alert was between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., and between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand was estimated to reach 2,550 megawatts (MW), while available supply was only at 2,487 MW.
NGCP said that 34 plants were on forced outage, while 18 others were running on derated capacities, for a total of 957.3MW unavailable to the grid.
It added that the issuance of the red and yellow alerts were the major power plants that went offline, namely, Therma Visayas, Inc. 1, Panay Energy Development Corp. 3 and KEPCO SPC Power Corp. 2; and limited power import from Mindanao.
A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
