Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) remains a significant force in Sarawak's political landscape, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He emphasized the party's enduring relevance, citing its strong showing in the recent state election, where it notably secured victories in the traditionally opposition-held Pelawan and Bukit Assek seats in Sibu.
Reflecting on SUPP's 65-year journey, Abang Johari commended the party for gracefully overcoming various challenges, which have only served to strengthen its resolve. He remarked on SUPP's continued vitality, noting that it has successfully regained the trust of the people, as evidenced by its electoral successes.
Addressing attendees at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Chinese New Year Celebration and the party’s 65th Anniversary Dinner, Abang Johari underscored the fraternal relationship between SUPP and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), likening them to brothers. He highlighted their pivotal role in establishing Sarawak's first coalition government in 1970, predating the formation of Barisan Nasional (BN).
Explaining Sarawak's departure from BN in 2018, Abang Johari emphasized the unique nature of Sarawakian politics, rooted in familial bonds and social inclusivity. He reassured the public that despite GPS's overwhelming electoral victory, the coalition remains committed to internal checks and balances, with each component party fulfilling its role.
Abang Johari also reaffirmed Sarawak's support for the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and Chinese independent schools, emphasizing the inclusivity of Sarawak's educational policies. He cited examples of Bumiputera students thriving in Mandarin-speaking environments, highlighting the multicultural fabric of Sarawakian society.
The event, hosted by SUPP and co-organized by its branches in Sibu, brought together prominent figures including Deputy Premier and SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Sri Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Datuk Sri Fatimah Abdullah, and other dignitaries.
In conclusion, Abang Johari's remarks underscored SUPP's enduring relevance in Sarawak's political arena, its commitment to coalition politics, and its inclusive approach to governance. As Sarawak continues to navigate its political landscape, SUPP remains a steadfast advocate for the interests of its constituents, embodying resilience, adaptability, and a vision for a prosperous future.
