The Sarawak government is on a mission to achieve Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) recognition for the Sarawak Delta by 2026, as announced by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Speaking at the grand opening of the Sheraton Kuching Hotel, the Premier revealed that ongoing assessments are evaluating the international value of Sarawak Delta, the nation's sixth geopark.

Abang Johari highlighted the focus on connecting Sarawak Delta with South Korea's Jeju Island, a recognized UGGp celebrated for its diverse volcanic formations and geological resources. To facilitate this connection, he expressed the need for a dedicated airline, emphasizing direct flights from South Korea, Japan, and other Asian destinations to Kuching.

Covering 3,112 sq km, Sarawak Delta boasts 28 rock geosites, 12 diverse biological geosites, and 14 cultural geosites, securing its certification as the sixth national geopark in 2022. The Premier underlined the unique landscapes and rich biodiversity that contribute to its geopark status.

In addition to Sarawak Delta's ambitions, Abang Johari provided updates on Niah National Park's submission to be recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Positioned in the final stages of submission, success would mark Sarawak's second Unesco World Heritage Site, complementing Gunung Mulu National Park and attracting more tourists keen on exploring Niah Caves' significant history.

Acknowledging the state's commitment to promoting Sarawak, the Premier emphasized investments in tourism infrastructure. The government's efforts extend beyond tourist attractions, securing international conventions and business events. Three upcoming international conventions, including the World Water Congress and Exhibition, are expected to draw around 10,000 participants.

Abang Johari stressed the importance of quality accommodation for business tourists, expressing confidence in the newly opened Sheraton Kuching Hotel. Under the management of Marriott International, the hotel is anticipated to enhance the state's tourism sector through its international connections and renowned hospitality.

The grand opening event was attended by dignitaries including Abang Johari's wife, Deputy Premiers, and ministers from various portfolios, highlighting the collaborative effort to boost Sarawak's tourism industry. As the state continues to invest in tourism infrastructure and promotion, the strategic initiatives aim to position Sarawak as a global destination for both leisure and business travelers.
