Matt Fitzpatrick produced an impressive performance at The Players Championship, pushing for victory before eventually finishing second.

The Englishman had put himself firmly in contention until the very end at TPC Sawgrass, with his form catching the attention of fellow professionals.

Among those praising Fitzpatrick was Robert MacIntyre, who made a bold claim about the Englishman’s recent level.

The Scot believes Fitzpatrick has been performing like one of the very best players in the world.

Robert MacIntyre says Matt Fitzpatrick has been playing like a top-five player

Speaking after the final round at TPC Sawgrass, MacIntyre praised Fitzpatrick’s overall game and consistency.

He suggested the former US Open champion has quietly been operating at a level comparable with the top-tier golfers on the planet.

“No, Matt is a great guy, superb player,” MacIntyre said. “Obviously has come back from a little bit of a lull from the start of last year, and he’s probably been top five in the world since halfway through last season.

“Been lucky enough, he’s been a teammate in the Ryder Cup for two years now. Yeah, if it wasn’t me, then hopefully it’s him.”

MacIntyre’s comments reflected the respect Fitzpatrick commands among his European Ryder Cup teammates.

MacIntyre was also asked whether he had learned anything from Fitzpatrick during their time together in the Ryder Cup team.

However, the Scot admitted that their approaches to the game are quite different.

“Probably not, to be honest with you. I’m less analytical. I’m not the brightest guy, but I know how to play golf, just shape balls,” he added.

“He graphs well, and he and his caddie do a great job. Hopefully, they can get the job done.”

Fitzpatrick ultimately came close to lifting the trophy at The Players Championship, underlining MacIntyre’s view that he has been performing at an elite level.
