RANAU: A 48-year-old rubber tapper was fined RM3,500, in default eight months’ jail, for possessing an unlicensed homemade shotgun, locally known as a ‘bakakuk’.
Muhammad Rizal Abdullah was charged under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
The offence took place at about 4.30pm on July 13, 2026, at an unnumbered house in Kampung Togoyog, Ranau.
The firearm was discovered during a police operation led by Inspector Askandal Madin while officers were investigating a separate case involving causing hurt and criminal intimidation.
Police found the homemade break-action shotgun in a corner of the living room and seized it for further investigation.
Checks with the authorities found that Rizal did not have a valid licence or permit to possess the firearm. Further examination confirmed that the shotgun was in working condition.
He was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of the firearm under the Arms Act 1960. The court imposed a RM3,500 fine, with eight months’ imprisonment if he failed to pay.
