KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Football Association (Sabah FA) women’s team targets a crucial three points against Kelana United in tonight’s (Saturday) National Women’s League showdown at Likas Stadium.
Their last encounter in June ended in a scoreless stalemate at Kuala Lumpur’s MPAJ Stadium.
With both sides firmly in the title race, the stakes are high. Kelana United currently sit in second place behind Selangor FC on goal difference with 19 points, while Sabah FA are just two points adrift with a game in hand.
Head coach Bobby Gonzales is confident his squad can secure a victory, emphasising the importance of building on their strong performance from last week’s 1-1 away draw against Selangor.
Despite a slow start, they took control of the match and opened the scoring through Enzi Hekima Starks, though a momentary lapse of focus allowed Selangor to equalise just minutes later.
“Tomorrow’s match is incredibly important, walking away with three points will secure our place at the top of the table.
“I hope my players can build on the momentum from last week’s match against Selangor, give it their all and bring home the win,” he said.
He added that Enzi is a doubt for the match after sustaining an injury against Selangor, though she managed to play through the pain and score in the second half.
However, he remains confident that anyone in the squad called up to replace the American will be up to the task. He also called on fans to show up in full force and rally behind the team.
