Kota Kinabalu: Sabah plans to replace its cattle offspring return system with a bond of at least 10 per cent of an animal’s market value, State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said.
He said the bond would be returned after three years but forfeited if the animals died due to poor care or were sold.
Jamawi said this after officiating the Sabah Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Livestock Industry Convention in conjunction with its 50th anniversary celebration at Wisma Pertanian here Tuesday.
He said the Ministry also planned to reactivate grazing pastures, while about 2,800 cattle and goats selected in Australia had yet to arrive.
He also announced a local buffalo breed called Tompok, developed by DVS at its Telupid facility, which he hoped would encourage young people to rear buffalo as a hobby and eventually as a source of income.
