Safma assesses Tawau fishermen's needs to strengthen fisheries sector

TAWAU: Sabah Fish Marketing Sdn Bhd (Safma) is expanding its field assessments to better understand the needs of local fishermen and strengthen the state’s fisheries ecosystem.

Safma General Manager Burhan Japar said the initiative aims to safeguard fishermen’s welfare through a more efficient, comprehensive industry chain.

Speaking during an inspection of fishing equipment outlets at Jalan Pasar here on Thursday, Burhan said the visit served to survey gear available in the Tawau market and identify pressing local requirements.

He stressed that developing Sabah’s fisheries sector must extend beyond marketing seafood to addressing the wider supply chain, including logistical facilities and appropriate gear.

Burhan added that while Tawau holds significant potential to drive the local economy and boost fishermen's net incomes, strengthening the industry cannot be undertaken by Safma alone and requires close cooperation from all stakeholders.
