Sarhad-e-Punjab Sports Club completed 25 years this week.

The club was set up in 2001. Club president Gurinder Singh Mattu informed that the club’s chief patron IPS Harmanbir Singh Gill (DIG, Punjab Police), patron Rajesh Sharma (PCS), chairman Hardesh Sharma, vice-chairman Makhtul Singh Aulakh, senior vice-president Nirvair Singh Sarkaria, Varinder Chawla, vice-president Ajay Kumar Vermani and principal Rajesh Prabhakar had planted trees on its second anniversary in 2003.

During the past 25 years, many sportspersons were felicitated by the club.

In the past few years, the Sarhad-e-Punjab Sports Club organised athletics, kabaddi, volleyball, tug-of-war and cricket tournaments to keep the youth away from drugs. The club also participated in social service works.

For running a signature campaign under the ‘Save Girl Child, Educate Girl Child’ campaign against female foeticide, the club was awarded a district-level prize thrice by the district administration and its name was registered in the Guinness World Records, India Star Young Achiever Award and India Book. The club also felicitated two Padma Shri and 10 Arjuna Awardees, international and national-level players with Lifetime Achievement Award and ‘Maan Punjab Da’ Award. The best coach is given the Hari Singh Nalwa Award.

“Every year, we organise sports fairs and honour achievers. We would like sports lovers, sports promoters, social workers and educational institutions to continue to guide us,” said Mattu.
