Sen. Pia cayetano has co-sponsored senate resolution (sr) 210, which was adopted by the senate to commend and congratulate filipino athletes for their achievements in the 33rd southeast asian (sea) games held in thailand.

The resolution cited the philippine contingent’s strong showing in the regional meet, where filipino athletes secured a total of 50 gold, 73 silver, and 145 bronze medals. Lawmakers lauded the athletes’ performances as a testament to their dedication, discipline, and excellence in international competition, as well as a source of national pride.

Sr 210 recognizes the country’s delegation for bringing honor to the philippines in one of southeast asia’s most competitive sporting events. Athletes underwent months, and in many cases, years of intensive training and preparation to reach the podium.

Cayetano, a former national athlete, said witnessing the competitions firsthand was a deeply moving experience.

“behind every medal is a story of perseverance — early mornings, missed family moments, injuries endured, and the quiet determination to represent the country with honor,” cayetano said, noting that the athletes’ achievements resonated far beyond the sporting arena.

The senator said that sports development goes beyond the pursuit of medals and plays a vital role in nation-building. She highlighted the contribution of sports to advancing key sustainable development goals (sdgs), particularly in promoting health and well-being, quality education, social inclusion and gender equality.

Cayetano said access to sports programs helps guide young people toward healthy lifestyles while instilling values such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience. She also pointed to the strong showing of women athletes in the sea games, saying their success challenges stereotypes and underscores the importance of equal opportunities in sports.

“when young girls see filipinas excelling on the international stage, it expands their sense of what is possible,” she said.

Beyond recognition, cayetano called for sustained government support for sports development, stressing the need for increased investment in grassroots programs, adequate and transparent funding, and the establishment of world-class training facilities to ensure that talent from all regions can be identified and nurtured.

“excellence in sports does not happen by chance,” she said. “it requires long-term planning, consistent funding, and a system that supports athletes from the grassroots to the elite level.”

Sr 210 forms part of broader legislative efforts to strengthen the country’s sports ecosystem, reaffirming the senate’s commitment to empowering filipino athletes and ensuring that future generations are given every opportunity to excel on the regional and global stage.
