Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Football Association football (Safa) academy was officially launched by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmy Yahya at the Safa’s training ground, Saturday.
The academy will involve trainees under the age of 12, 14 and 16 to be trained by qualified coaches led by Omar Maya Amat.
Shahelmy, who is also State Public Works Minister, said the main aim of setting up the academy is to develop the sport and unearth raw talents in the State.
“Later this year, we will be expanding by stages to all eight zones throughout the State. The football development programme that followed will give us hope to see more talents being produced,” he said.
He added the academy would also play the role of producing football coaches.
“The academy will also help to train former state players and those interested in football coaching. There is a potential to produce quality coaches and make coaching as their career,” he added.
Meanwhile, he also called on the fans to continue their support to Sabah FC.
“Sabah FC are doing well so far in the league. I hope the momentum will continue and I would also like to take this opportunity to call on all Sabahans to give their support to the team,” he said.
