State-level Bisaya Cultural Fest this year

BEAUFORT: The State-level Bisaya Cultural Festival will be held this year to further empower the ethnic culture through various competitions involving traditional dance and music.

United Sabah Bisaya Association (PBBS) President Datuk Ruslan Muharam said the festival also involved participation from 18 PBBS zones throughout Sabah.

“PBBS has plans to hold the State-level Bisaya Cultural Festival possibly in the middle of this year, which will also involve several Bisaya cultural competitions.

“Among them are kulintangan competition, bagandang (drumming) and cultural dances, in which, of course, we will involve the participation of young people from all over the region,” he said, when officiating the Kulintangan PBBS Zon Lupak Festival at Dewan Kampung Lupak, on Tuesday.

Read more Ruslan, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, said in order to empower culture, the large-scale festival aims to give exposure to the Bisaya youth.

The Lumadan Assemblyman said it is necessary to ensure that Bisaya ethnic traditions and culture remain in the community’s life as well as avoid being lost to time.

“Therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure that the new generation of the Bisaya community is exposed to this culture through this competition and traditional ethnic music.

Earlier, various competitions were held at the two-day festival, including kulintangan competition, cultural dances, traditional costumes (for children) and Bisaya songs.
