Stella Ambrose, a trailblazer in the field of palm oil milling, has emerged as a leading figure in Malaysia's engineering industry. Born on 18th July 1972 in Papar, Sabah, Stella Ambrose demonstrated her passion and dedication to engineering from an early age. She pursued her academic endeavours and graduated with honours from UMIST, UK, in 1994, obtaining a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Equipped with a solid educational foundation, she embarked on a journey that would shape her illustrious career.

In November 1994, Stella defied conventions and made history as the first woman engineer employed in a palm oil mill in Malaysia. Her entry into this male-dominated industry was a testament to her determination and unwavering commitment. Over the years, Stella honed her skills and acquired valuable qualifications, including a 1st Grade Steam Engineer Certificate of Competency and a Diploma in Palm Oil Milling Technology with distinction Notably, she became the first lady engineer in Malaysia to hold both the 2nd and 1st Grade Steam Engineer Certificates of Competency.

Stella's career progression within Sawit Kinabalu Sdn.Bhd, where she has been employed since 1994, is a testament to her exceptional abilities. From her early roles as an assistant engineer, mill engineer, and mill manager, she rapidly ascended the ranks, demonstrating her proficiency in managing palm oil mill operations. Notably, she played a pivotal role in overseeing the construction and successful commissioning of Lumadan Palm Oil Mill, where she also authored the mill's first comprehensive Safe Operating Procedure (SOP) for DOSH submission. Stella's innovative mindset led her to develop various programs and templates using Microsoft Excel to simplify work processes and enhance efficiency in the mills.

As the General Manager (Processing & Engineering) and later as the Head of Processing, Engineering & Property Development, Stella spearheaded groundbreaking initiatives within Sawit Kinabalu Group. She led the complete restructuring of the Processing & Engineering Division, driving the company's strategy of "Turning Waste into Wealth."" Under her guidance, Sawit Kinabalu successfully implemented projects such as the Biogas Power Plant in Apas Balung Mill, as well as other ventures like the sawit shield production plant, dried long fiber (DLF) and charcoal plant, and OPF animal feed plant. Stella's instrumental role in planning and implementing process improvement projects in all the mills and refinery solidified her reputation as an industry leader.

Moreover, Stella was at the forefront of sustainability efforts, contributing significantly to the establishment of Sawit Kinabalu's Sustainability Unit. Her exceptional leadership skills enabled her to navigate complex challenges and make impactful changes within her sphere of influence. She served as the secretary of the central committee and chairman of the RSPO and MSPO working committee for Sawit Kinabalu Group, further amplifying her impact on sustainable practices in the industry.

Stella's accomplishments extend beyond her professional endeavours. She actively engages with the academic community and shares her knowledge and experience with young aspiring engineers. For four consecutive years, she provided valuable guidance to the team from the UMS chemical engineering school, leading them to win prizes in the yearly competition on Chemical Process Design organized by the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). Stella's commitment to empowering the next generation of engineers showcases her dedication to the growth and development of the industry as a whole.

In addition to her professional pursuits, Stella has embarked on a remarkable personal journey. Despite not being actively involved in sports during her earlier years, she found her stride at the age of 40 and has since completed over 60 running events, ranging from 5 km to 52 km distances. This serves as a testament to her resilience and determination to excel in all aspects of life.

Stella's competency extends beyond her technical expertise. She possesses exceptional leadership and management skills, allowing her to effectively lead teams, foster collaboration, and identify and develop talent. As the current Controller of Engineering & Property Development for Sawit Kinabalu Sdn.Bhd, Stella continues to steer the company towards responsible and efficient use of resources.
