Kota Kinabalu: In order to avoid alienating East Malaysians, a Sabah MP has advised Putrajaya against trying to “out-Islamise” the opposition.

Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau (pic) said such efforts might also prevent non-Malays from casting a ballot in impending by-elections and ensuing state and federal elections next.

In an article published by FMT, he warned the Unity Government that it would be risky for the unity administration to engage in a political contest with Perikatan Nasional that it certainly won’t be able to win.

The former federal minister also advised the administration to “treat everyone as stakeholders” when considering any adjustments to sensitive and delicate matters pertaining to the nation.

He used the recent uproar over proposals to include a module on Islamic Hadiths as an example.

The Education Ministry said last week the module was aimed at fostering an appreciation of the hadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) and to promote better religious understanding among school-going children.

The Ministry later clarified that the module was only meant for Muslim schoolchildren.

Tangau also suggested that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim repackage the Madani concept to prepare Malaysians for “upcoming storms”.

“Instead of pandering to the right and dividing the nation on ethno-religious lines, he should instead unite Malaysians against crises that would be cruel to us all,” he was quoted telling FMT in a report.
