TAWAU: A 17-year-old boy was detained to assist in the investigation of a fight that resulted in injuries to a victim at the Tawau Sports Complex on Monday.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was apprehended around 1pm on Wednesday in a residential area along Jalan Kuhara by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division (BSJ) of the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD).

He said the arrest was made based on intelligence and information from a mobile phone belonging to the suspect that was seized.

“We are actively tracking down other individuals involved in the fight,” he said.

Jasmin said the altercation took place around 9.30pm when the victim and three friends were approached by a group of individuals on motorcycles at the Sports Complex.

During the incident, one of the victim’s friends sustained a head injury after being struck with a helmet by one of the suspects.

“The incident began with a verbal exchange between the two parties, which escalated into a fight,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ jail, a fine, or both, on conviction.

The suspect is also being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon or object, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, along with a fine or cane, on conviction.
