Not so long ago, a prevalent scam plagued the rural regions of Northern states in Peninsular Malaysia. However, due to increased police operations, the scam has significantly diminished and has mostly been eradicated by the authorities.
Nonetheless, occasional tales circulate of unfortunate individuals who have fallen victim to scammers armed with nothing more than a can of insect spray and a penknife, resulting in the loss of a substantial amount of high-quality fresh meat.
Should you find yourself at a wet market and encounter exceptionally cheap local beef, exercise caution. It could be meat from a stolen cow that needed immediate disposal or perhaps a cow that was scammed in the bushes the previous night.
The former case constitutes pure theft. Thieves would arrive at a farm in a covered lorry, swiftly making their escape before the farmer could even reach for his shotgun.
In the latter scenario, the scammer would approach the cow and administer insect spray to the animal's nose, rendering it unconscious. This marks the initial stage of the scam.
Next, the scammers, operating in pairs, would proceed to sever the animal's limbs using only a penknife, leaving the remainder for scavengers. Their preferred mode of transportation is always a covered pickup truck. They would transport the limbs from the bushes to a nearby shed, strip off the skin, and make their way to a wet market where waiting dealers are prepared to purchase the stolen goods.
Recently, we took a drive through the rural areas of Kedah, where cattle and goats were being herded in preparation for the upcoming Aidiladha festival.
Stringent security measures have been implemented to safeguard the animals in anticipation of the celebration. It's worth noting that each cow may fetch a considerable sum, ranging from RM7,000 to RM8,000.
Losing even a single cow poses a significant setback for farmers. Consequently, they are taking no chances and remain vigilant to ensure their livestock are not targeted by these cow scammers anytime soon
