At 2.00am on August 2, Dr Sng Kim Chai was rushed to Klang Hospital with acute heart failure. A few weeks later, he was back seeing patients. Why? Because on Pulau Ketam, if the doctor stays home, nobody else is there.https://codeblue.galencentre.org/2026/10/obituary-dr-sng-kim-chai-sole-community-doctor-of-pulau-ketam-dr-sng-kim-hock/
For forty years he was the island's only community doctor (GP), caring for some 10,000 people, mostly fisherfolk of an older generation, as the young drifted to the mainland for greener pastures. His brother, Dr Sng Kim Hock, a retired neurologist, put the question plainly in his CodeBlue eulogy. https://codeblue.galencentre.org/2026/10/obituary-dr-sng-kim-chai-sole-community-doctor-of-pulau-ketam-dr-sng-kim-hock/
If you have a stroke at 3am, who comes? If your father collapses at supper, who comes? If a jellyfish sting turns into an asthma attack, who comes?
On Pulau Ketam, the answer was one man.
He charged the villagers gently. He raised five children. He owned a second-hand van and, when he died on October 21, no property. He began as a houseman at Kuala Lumpur Hospital in May 1975, and he died there too. https://codeblue.galencentre.org/2026/10/obituary-dr-sng-kim-chai-sole-community-doctor-of-pulau-ketam-dr-sng-kim-hock/
No scriptwriter would dare invent that circle.
Now to the uncomfortable part. We are a country that loves a title. We hand out Datukships like name tags at a convention, to businessmen, to the politically well-connected, and sometimes to people whose only sacrifice was a long lunch. Yet a doctor who spent four decades on a fishing island, in the dark and in the monsoon, goes to his grave with a eulogy written by his brother and not a single line from the system he served.
To be fair, I won't set him against the civil servants. Many of them also serve in hard postings, and plenty do it honourably. My complaint is not that they are rewarded. It is that we have no way to notice a man like Dr Sng while he is alive. Honours here move through palaces, state governments and committees, and they go to those who are known. He was known only to the people who needed him, which is the best kind of fame and the one least likely to be recorded.
So here is a proposal that needs no palace. Build him a community hall on Pulau Ketam and call it Dewan Dr Sng Kim Chai.
Not a plaque tucked behind a clinic, and not a statue that tourists photograph on the way to the seafood. A hall. A place where the island holds its weddings and funerals, its health talks and its Chinese New Year gatherings. A place where the old fishermen he treated can sit, and where the grandchildren who left can come back and see whose island it was. Perhaps with a small health corner inside, so the work he did every day has a home on the island he never left.
The Selangor state government, the Klang municipal council and the Health Ministry could fund it. Corporate Malaysia, which loves a CSR photo-op, could do far worse with its budget. The Malaysian Medical Association could add a bursary for young doctors who take rural and island postings, and the hall could be where they are welcomed. Of course, the family and the island community should have the first word on what they want, and I would not presume to speak for them.
His brother asked whether there will be another hero to take his place. I fear the honest answer depends on us. Nobody will choose a lifetime of 3am calls for little pay if they believe no one will ever notice.
So let us notice. Not with a Netflix series, as I first thought, and not only with a medal that arrives late, if at all. Let us notice with a hall with his name over the door, full of the noise of the people he kept alive.
Dr Sng Kim Chai served Pulau Ketam for forty years. The least we can do is give the island a place to remember him for four hundred more.
