LAHAD DATU: Three couples were detained for “khalwat” (close proximity) during a special operation by the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) on the eve of the Merdeka celebration.

The five-hour operation, which began at 9pm, involved officers from Jheains Lahad Datu, Kota Kinabalu and Tungku, along with police and Immigration Department personnel.

According to Jheains Lahad Datu Administration Officer Mardi Ariffin, the raid targeted immoral activities and inspected over 60 rooms across 10 hotels.

“Three couples were found in compromising situations, and the team also discovered condoms, lubricants and “Tisu Magic” believed to be used by the suspects,” he said.

They were arrested under Section 84 of the Sabah Syariah Criminal Offence Enactment for committing “khalwat” and indecent behaviour.

All suspects were taken to the Lahad Datu Police Headquarters for further action.
