KUALA LUMPUR – Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has challenged PAS to prove its commitment to Malay unity by turning its rhetoric into concrete political cooperation ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).

“If you are truly sincere about uniting the Malay ummah, let us see it.

“We can use a formula to unite and face GE16 together. Let us see how honest and sincere you are,” he said during his winding-up speech at the 2026 Umno General Assembly.

Mohamad said the test could begin after the Melaka state election, suggesting that the four states under the State Government 4 (SG4) grouping could demonstrate whether PAS was genuinely prepared for broader political cooperation.

“After Melaka, let us see how far this goes. Let SG4 hold an election. Do it in Terengganu,” he said.

SG4 comprises Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis, all governed by Pas and Perikatan Nasional.

The challenge comes days after Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang outlined the party’s strategy for GE16 at Pas’ 72nd Annual Muktamar, with the party focusing on consolidating its existing political strength while expanding its influence nationwide.

SG4 has been central to that strategy, with Pas presenting the four states as a showcase for its governing model and calling for stronger governance, financial management and policy delivery.

Mohamad’s remarks put Pas’ calls for Malay and Muslim unity to a practical political test - whether the party is prepared to translate those calls into an electoral arrangement with Umno.

The Umno number two also warned that the party could not afford to wait until the current government’s term ended before acting to protect its political position.

“If we wait for the life of this government to drag on until the end of its electoral life, the life of Umno will be finished. All sorts of things will be done and Umno will be buried so that it does not become a threat to them,” he said.

Although he did not identify who he believed would seek to weaken Umno, Mohamad said the party had to be prepared to negotiate and engage with other political forces.

“We know how to deal with people. We negotiate and talk with people, otherwise it will become worse. We will die,” he said.
