Kota Kinabalu: A man and a woman were fined a total of RM30,000 for employing illegal immigrants, respectively.
Suriani Shamsudin, 37, and Lambong Abd Kadil, 41, pleaded guilty separately before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain, to the charge against them.
Suriani was fined RM10,000 or six months’ jail for each of illegal immigrant she had hired.
She had employed two Indonesians who did not have valid identification documents at 12.30pm on May 12 his year at the Sabar Menanti Trading in Benoni Commercial Centre, Papar.
Suraini had the RM20,000 fine.
The offence under Section 55B(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which provides for a fine of betweeen RM10,000 and RM50,000, or a jail term of up to 12 months, or both, for each undocumented immigrant employed, upon conviction.
Meanwhile, Lambong was fined RM10,000 or six months behind bars for hiring a Filipino who did not possess any valid documents on the same day also in Papar.
He paid the fine.
Prosecuting Officer Norhayati Abdul Hari from the Immigration Department appeared for the prosecution.
In the Magistrate’s Court, an unrelated case, a 19-year-old man was fined RM1,000, in default one month’s jail for playing online gambling in public place.
Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali meted out the fine on Mohamad Azwan Siyamaih, 19, after he admitted to the charge against him.
He committed the offence at a premises in Penampang on July 15.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Akaash Singh prosecuted while Mohamad Azwan was not represented.
