Two killed, several injured in crashes

Kota Kinabalu: A 28-year-old was killed and his passenger went into a coma after the Proton Persona they were travelling in crashed into a cement signboard at the 360 roundabout along Jalan Bundusan, at 4am, Saturday.

The victim was identified as Mohd Nazhwan Nordin from Kunak. The strong impact of the crash caused the steering to bend and the car to be badly wrecked, with the airbags coming off and the bonnet bursting open.

A small fire broke out in the car but it was put out by members of the public who helped pull both victims from the wreck.

The car belongs to their friend from Keningau and was believed to be heading home from the KDCA area. A Fire and Rescue team was also at the scene to assist.

Sergeant Unice and Inspector Saparia Ladoni were investigating at the scene.

In PITAS, a 20-year-old man was killed while four others were injured in an accident involving a Toyota Hilux and a Perodua Kancil at Jalan Kg Kesagaan, Saturday.

Kota Marudu District Police Chief Supt Simiun Lomudin said the deceased was identified as Aqmad Danial Zulkifli, who was seated in the rear left passenger seat of the Hilux.

He said the Hilux driver, Hisafwan Saeawalih, 20, sustained injuries to his back and neck, while another rear passenger, identified as Deadly John, suffered head injuries.

“The Kancil driver, Mohd Syukri, 20, sustained head and neck injuries, as well as a fracture to his arm. His passenger, Norman Alibin, 41, suffered injuries to his right side, neck, leg and spine.

“All five victims were taken by ambulance to Pitas Hospital for further treatment,” he said.

The Hilux was believed to be travelling from Kota Marudu town towards Pitas, while the Kancil was heading in the opposite direction, from Pitas towards Kota Marudu.

“Upon reaching the scene while descending a hill along a bend, the Hilux lost control, skidded and entered the Kancil’s lane, which was on the opposite side of the road,” said Simiun.
