Two men’s bid to steal electric cables foiled

TAWAU: Two suspects attempting to steal electrical installation equipment from a Government-Linked Company (GLC) premises’ was thwarted by security personnel on Tuesday.

Tawau Acting District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh said the suspects, a 41-year-old local man and a 28-year-old foreign national, were caught at the premises owned by Sabah Softwoods Berhad (SSB) in Kampung Pasir Putih, Jalan Sin San, around 9 pm.

“Security guards on duty, along with three colleagues, apprehended the duo who were behaving suspiciously and carrying a gunny sack containing stolen electric cables.

“Among the items seized were a coil of electric cable, a modified hacksaw blade, a test pen and cutting tools suspected to have been used in the attempted theft,” he said, Thursday.

He said the police were informed at about the incident at 10.20 pm, and the suspects with the stolen items were handed over. “One of the suspects has six past records for crime and drugs, while the other has a drug-related record,” he said.

The estimated loss in property damage is valued at RM500. Investigations are being carried out under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
