KUALA LUMPUR – Umno is considering focusing its political cooperation negotiations directly with Pas rather than Perikatan Nasional (PN), following the views expressed by delegates at the party's 2026 General Assembly.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party leadership would form a special negotiating committee to determine the direction and strategy for future political cooperation.
“The negotiating committee will be formed by the party leadership. As with the previous election, we did indeed hold negotiations with Pas as well as PN.
“But if we look at the debates and the delegates, there is a tendency for us to focus on negotiations with the Pas leadership rather than looking at it in the context of PN itself,” he said during a press conference here today.
Asyraf said the leadership would take into consideration the views raised by delegates during this year's assembly when determining the party's approach to political cooperation.
He said previous election cycles had involved discussions with both Pas and PN, but the majority of speakers at this year's Pau had shown a preference for focusing on direct negotiations with the Pas leadership.
