KUALA LUMPUR – Umno wants the country's administration to continue being referred to as the Malaysia Unity Government, in line with the original agreement that formed the government under its 18-point agreement.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said there was no issue with the Malaysia Madani concept being used as the government’s vision or “war cry”, but the prominence given to the term “Madani Government” instead of “Unity Government” was not in line with the original agreement.
He said the 18-point agreement on the formation of the Unity Government clearly stipulated the name Malaysia Unity Government.
“From the very beginning, it was stated that we must respect what is enshrined in the agreement.
“This is not a one-party government. When Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took his oath (as Prime Minister), an agreement involving 18 parties was formalised and named the Agreement on the Formation of the Malaysia Unity Government,” he told journalists.
Asyraf Wajdi was speaking at a press conference held in conjunction with the 2026 Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here on Saturday.
Elaborating, Asyraf Wajdi stressed that the government’s position as a coalition comprising multiple parties also had implications for how it should be administered.
He said the Prime Minister must consistently engage in discussions and consultations with all parties that make up the Unity Government.
“This is not like previous governments that had an absolute majority of 112 (parliamentary seats), where the Prime Minister could be said to be leading a government formed by one party.
“But when it is a Unity Government, a government that is united, consultation must be carried out with all members of those parties,” he said.
