KUALA LUMPUR – The relationship between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) remains intact, with Umno continuing to uphold the agreement underpinning the formation of the Unity Government.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party would continue to uphold political stability until the current administration’s term ends or Parliament is dissolved.
He stressed that Umno would not support any attempt to change the government merely by replacing the Prime Minister.
“It is not on the verge of breaking apart. The reason is that we are still committed to the agreement on the formation of the Malaysian Unity Government.
“As long as we have not reached the end of the term or the election, as long as the basis is that we will not ‘break through the roof’ or change this government by making a change that only involves the Prime Minister, that is what breaking through the roof means.
“We are thinking about the political stability that we are defending,” he said during a press conference held in conjunction with the 2026 Umno General Assembly (PAU) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here on Saturday.
Asyraf said Umno did not see any major issue that could affect the continuity of the Unity Government, adding that the decision on the government's future should ultimately be left to the people through an election.
On whether party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's repeated use of the word “guru” during his policy speech, coupled with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sarcastic response, indicated a war of nerves or that Umno and BN would not cooperate with PH in GE16, Asyraf said it was too early to draw such conclusions.
He said negotiations on political cooperation for the next general election (GE16) would only begin after the dissolution of Parliament was announced.
“It is still premature because negotiations have not even begun. As mentioned by the President, wait until the dissolution takes place, only then will the negotiations begin.
“That is what happened in Johor and that also happened in Negeri Sembilan. When the dissolution was announced, negotiations began.
"Negotiations do not begin before dissolution,” he said.
However during the same press conference earlier, Asyraf said Umno was considering focusing its political cooperation negotiations directly with Pas rather than Perikatan Nasional (PN).
He said the party leadership would form a special negotiating committee to determine the direction and strategy for future political cooperation.
On Friday, Zahid drew the attention of PAU 2026 delegates when he repeatedly referred to an unnamed individual as “guru”, urging the person to listen to the voices of Umno, Barisan Nasional (BN) and the people.
Anwar later responded sarcastically to the remarks using the terms “guru” and “slayyy” in a social media post after arriving in New Delhi, India, to attend the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit.
