SHAH ALAM – The oldest and youngest candidates contesting the Negeri Sembilan State Election failed to pull off upsets after both were defeated in their respective constituencies.
The oldest candidate, 70-year old Datuk Abd Latif A. Thambi from Amanah, who contested under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner, lost the Gemencheh state seat to incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Suhaimizan Bizar.
Based on unofficial results, Suhaimizan secured 12,056 votes to retain the seat with a majority of 7,473 votes, while Abd Latif garnered 4,583 votes.
Abd Latif, who is also Amanah Negeri Sembilan deputy chairman, was previously announced by the Election Commission (SPR) as the oldest candidate contesting in the Negeri Sembilan state election.
Meanwhile, the youngest candidate, 23-year old Leevineshwaraan Murugan from Bersatu, also failed to capture the Sri Tanjung state seat, securing just 445 votes.
The seat was won by PH candidate Datuk Dr G. Rajasekaran, who polled 3,921 votes, defeating BN's Achutan Alagan, who received 3,092 votes, with a majority of 829 votes.
In the five-cornered contest for Sri Tanjung, independent candidates Islah Wahyudi Zainudin and Datuk A Saravanan received 274 and 58 votes respectively.
The EC had earlier identified Abd Latif as the oldest candidate in the Negeri Sembilan polls, while Leevineshwaraan was named the youngest candidate after contesting the Sri Tanjung seat.
Of the 103 candidates confirmed to be contesting in the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election, candidates aged between 40 and 49 formed the largest age group, with 39 candidates.
This was followed by 33 candidates aged between 50 and 59, 16 candidates aged 60 and above, 12 candidates aged between 30 and 39, and three candidates aged between 18 and 29.
The previous record for the youngest candidate was held by Muhammad Syakir Fitri Sadri, who contested the Paroi state seat as an independent at the age of 25 in the 2023 state election.
Meanwhile, the record for the oldest candidate in the previous election was held by Bujang Abu, 72, who also contested as an independent.
