The Panchkula authorities on Tuesday inspected shops and vends selling tobacco products.

The drive was carried out by a three member team on the directions of Haryana Commissioner of the Food and Drugs Administration Manoj Kumar and Additional Deputy Commissioner Nisha Yadav. The team inspected Pramod Pan (Sector 14), Ajay Pan (Sector 5), Manoj Dhaba (Sector 22), Amit Patel (Sector 15), and Pintu Pan Bhandar (Sector 5).

Each of these establishments was penalised with a fine of Rs 200 for the non-compliance of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003.

During a raid at Pandit Pan in Sector 5, the team intercepted Vivek Patel and seized 33 packets of cigarettes. None of these carried the mandatory pictorial health warnings.

Taking cognisance of the violation, the team lodged a complaint at the Sector 5 Police Station for the registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of COTPA, 2003.
