Visayas grid placed under yellow, red alert due to plant outages

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) will raise the yellow and red alerts on the Visayas grid due to multiple plant outages on Thursday.

In an 8 a.m. advisory, NGCP said the yellow alert would be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The red alert will be up from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,555 megawatts (MW) against the available capacity of only 2,408 MW.

As of posting time, 25 plants are on forced outage while 18 others are running on derated capacities for a total of 796 MW unavailable to the grid.

The transmission firm said coal plants such as Therma Visayas 1, Therma Visayas 2, and Kepco SPC Power Corporation Unit 1 remain unavailable, and power imports from Mindanao were limited due to the outages of GNPower Kauswagan Unit 4 and Therma South Incorporated Unit 2.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement while a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
