MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has re-issued yellow and red alerts for the Visayas grid on Wednesday, as major power plants in the region continue to be unavailable.
In its 7:45 a.m. advisory, NGCP said that the yellow alert would be up between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and also between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Meanwhile, the red alert will be raised between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. as peak demand for the day was estimated to reach 2,548 megawatts (MW) against available capacity of at 2,362 MW.
The transmission firm continued that 25 plants were on forced outage, while 18 were running on derated capacities, for a total of 804.3 MW unavailable to the grid.
The factors that contributed to the yellow and red alerts were the continued unavailability of Visayas’ large coal plants, namely Therma Visayas Inc.1, Therma Visayas Inc. 2, and KEPCO SPC Power Corporation Unit 1; and the limited power imports from Mindanao due to the planned outages of some power plants in the region.
A yellow alert status is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
Meanwhile, a red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
