MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued red and yellow alerts for Visayas and Mindanao as power plants continued to be unavailable amid the high demand.
The transmission firm said that for Visayas, the yellow alert would be between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. The red alert is between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with peak demand expected to reach 2,504 megawatts (MW), amid an available capacity of only 2,233 MW.
In Mindanao, the yellow alert will be between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. The red alert will be between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand reaches about 2,592 MW amid an available capacity of only 2,549 MW.
For Visayas, NGCP said that 32 plants have been on forced outage, while 17 were running on derated capacities, for a total of 815.8 MW unavailable to the grid.
In Mindanao, 28 plants are on forced outage, while 6 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 784.5 MW unavailable to the grid.
A red alert is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
