Kevin Garnett believes Victor Wembanyama’s emotional Western Conference Finals celebration showed how much he still has to learn before becoming a champion.

The moment was powerful because San Antonio had just survived the defending champions and reached the NBA Finals earlier than many expected.

But for Garnett, that was exactly the reason to stay locked in, not release everything before the final stage even begins.

Kevin Garnett says Victor Wembanyama still needs heartbreak after San Antonio Spurs breakthrough

Speaking on the KG Certified podcast, Garnett reacted to Wembanyama breaking down after the Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.

“Guess what? The alien got to go through some heartache to be able to tell the fairy tale Hallmark card story,” Garnett said.

He added, “You understand? He got to go through some b_______. He’s crying in the m____________ Western Conference finals? That was too emotional for me.”

Wembanyama had reason to be overwhelmed. The Spurs beat OKC 111-103, returned to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014 and did it with a young core led by a player still early in his career.

Still, Garnett’s point was about championship mentality. He sees Wembanyama as special, but he also believes the true fairy-tale version of his career requires pain, pressure and finishing the job.

Garnett then explained why he felt Wembanyama’s emotions came too early, with the Knicks still waiting in the NBA Finals.

“Yeah, man. He’s got four more games to try to get. You’ve got to go through the finals now. Nah, you still got to be even keeled right here. And that trophy that ain’t [your goal],” KG continued.

“… It’s going to take my energy to run up this hill. I can’t be your… nah, that’s how bad they wanted to beat OKC. You know what I’m saying? But man, this right here. Nah,” the NBA legend concluded.

That is where Garnett’s relationship with Wembanyama adds weight. KG has praised his talent before and clearly understands the burden of being a franchise-changing big man with impossible expectations.

The warning was not that Wembanyama should stop caring. It was that the Western Conference trophy cannot feel like the emotional finish line when the Knicks are next.

Garnett’s message was harsh, but simple. Cry after the championship, not before the last four wins.
