Please tell me why we the Malaysian public have to learn about our potential ambassador to Indonesia from its envoy in Kuala Lumpur.

Why is it that an Indonesian seems to know more of what Putrajaya is planning on doing about appointing a new ambassador after the last nominee was unceremoniously dropped?

Local press is abuzz busy quoting Indonesian ambassador, His Excellency Hermono who revealed that a career diplomat might be appointed as our new envoy to his country, thereby dashing hopes for Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman from assuming the post.

According to Hermono, what he heard is that a career diplomat would be appointed to be our new envoy in Jakarta.

News reports quoted him making that statement during an interview on BFM's Breakfast Grille programme recently about who the new candidate could be.

But being a diplomat Hermono was quick to say that there was no objection nor intervention on the appointment of a candidate saying that Indonesia respects the appointment of any nominee that is considered appropriate by Putrajaya for the post.

However, he did say Indonesian prefers to have the best Malaysian citizen assume the post. Here we sensed that he might be hinting about the last candidate who appeared to be rather controversial for the position, therefore might not be the best Malaysian for that post.

On the other hand, the position has been vacant for such a long time he said that it seems to be sending a negative message to Jakarta.

I suppose he meant to say that we do not seem to regard Indonesia as important as other nations for neglecting to appoint a new emissary sooner.

Thus our bickering at home over one controversial candidate might be negatively viewed by our biggest and most important neighbour in the region. That's why this ambassador might have been compelled to voice his concern over the radio.

Previously, Tajuddin Rahman was reported to be our would-be ambassador to Indonesia but had since been dropped from consideration because the government changed its mind following criticisms by MPs, former diplomats, politicians and the general public.

That's history now.

But what is important is why we have to learn about our new potential ambassador to Indonesia from its envoy in KL.

Although he did not mention any name the hint that it would be a career diplomat was as good as telling us he knew more than us Malaysians.

It's something Wisma Putra might want to explain to the Malaysian public instead of keeping mum and leaving the local press to seek answers from an overseas source.
