It’s our third year straight where we visit the Smart City Summit & Expo in Taipei, Taiwan. Every year, the list of exhibitors and participating municipalities, counties, and state representatives grows. Every year, there will be new developments and showcases on what kind of technologies can be implemented to improve our lives. By visiting the Smart City Summit & Expo, ideas can be thrown around to see what sticks, then implemented back in our home.

For instance, for this 2026 Smart City Summit & Expo, Tokyo City has joined in. The city collaborated with different parties to enable the “smartification” of the city – Taisei Corporation, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, OMY Landlords’ Council, and Smart City Takeshiba.
The entire Tokyo has a digital twin of the city so that all the constructions or modifications proposed can be implemented in the digital twin first, before any ground is broken. Even natural disasters are also simulated so the impacts are known beforehand.

Poland is also a part of the show too. The message is simple – Gdańsk, Poland, is pioneering smart city focusing on open data, sustainable mobility, and high-tech urban governance within the Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot metropolitan area. The implementation of smart systems are already under way, like GPS-based bicycle system like Taipei’s massively successful YouBike.
Another city near Gdańsk is Gdynia, a port city. Gdynia is already seeking Taiwanese solutions, and they consist of:
- R&D projects carried out with Gdynia’s universities, ranging from technology, maritime, logistics, security, drones, and sea environment
- AI and robotics for people with difficulties in communication and mobility
- Remote reading of heat and water meters
- Carports with PV
- Local government center for energy transition
But that’s not all. Other countries are also seeking for solutions too. I stumbled across this, which highlights the issues with public transportation in Malaysia. I have to say, what’s stated here is indeed a big issue and it is causing major traffic jams within Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

And that’s why the Smart City Summit & Expo is incredibly insightful. Seeing the solutions available and how other countries implement them is going to only open more possibilities on how we can solve issues in our homeland.
If you’re around, do visit the 2026 Smart City Summit & Expo at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2.
