KINABATANGAN: A workers’ quarters block at Melewar Estate Division 1, Paris 3 here, was completely destroyed in a fire on Thursday.
Operations Commander PBK I Yus Bin Pg Pinsin said the fire involved a non-permanent four-door workers’ quarters block measuring 80 by 45 square feet, which was completely destroyed.
He said the Kota Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call through NG999 at 11.35am before proceeding to the scene.
“Firefighters arrived at the scene at 12.36pm, about 55 kilometres from the station,” he said.
He said the firefighters’ swift action prevented the fire from spreading to five nearby blocks. He said firefighting operations used one hose reel from the fire engine, while an open water source was used as there was no fire hydrant near the scene.
The fire was brought under control at 1.40pm, and no casualties were reported.
Inspection and hazard removal work were subsequently carried out before the operation ended at 1.43pm.
The operation involved seven personnel from the Kota Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station with a CFRT-1 fire engine, assisted by 10 members of the Melewar Estate Emergency Response Team (ERT).
The cause of the fire and the extent of losses have yet to be determined.
