The police have arrested six people allegedly involved in the theft of sand from the Yamuna riverbed and seized seven bullock carts loaded with illegally extracted material in Tigaon area.
The operation was carried out on May 18 by the ERV-211 police team under Tigaon police station limits, following a tip-off about illegal transportation of Yamuna sand using bullock carts.
According to police spokespersons, the team intercepted the suspects during a patrol on the Manjhawali–Tigaon road. Those arrested were identified as Jitender alias Bittu, Virender alias Leele, Deepak, and Deshraj alias Desi — all residents of Tigaon village — along with Rohit alias Sonu of Buapur village and Billu of Manjhawali village.
The police said all six were allegedly involved in illegal sand mining and were transporting stolen sand in bullock carts when they were caught.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to extracting sand from the Garhi Ghat area along the Yamuna in the Manjhawali belt. The sand was allegedly being sold in nearby areas for profit.
A case has been registered at the Tigaon police station under relevant sections related to illegal mining and theft.
Police also seized the seven bullock carts loaded with Yamuna sand from the spot. Officials said further investigation is underway to identify others linked to the illegal mining network operating in the riverine belt.
