Kota Kinabalu: A total of 40 participants took part in the Outdoor Run Technical Officials Basic Course organised by Sabah State Athletics Association (SSAA) at the Sabah International Convention Centre here on Saturday.
They were representatives from the SSAA affiliates and also from some of the running event’s organisers.
The one-day course was held as a proactive step for the State body to strengthen the management of outdoor running events such as the road run (fun run, marathon etc), cross country run, mountain run and trail run. It was conducted by Malaysia Athletics Federation’s (MAF) technical officer Bonnie Rudolf on the technical aspects of outdoor running, while SSAA deputy president Henry Kenneth Lawrence delivered a talk on event management.
Henry hopes with the understanding and knowledge learned, all future running events can be conducted according to the rules and guidelines, especially in ensuring health and safety measures including insurance coverage for participants and officials.
Meanwhile SSAA president Mohamat Hassan, who presented certificates to all the participants, reminded organisers that all local running events must obtain sanctions/permission from the State body, and a payment will be imposed based on the MAF’s ruling. He added that a system platform will also be created on the registration of organisers to improve the management and effectiveness of monitoring, and a special course will be held in the near future as an additional condition on the application.
