Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock admits he's changed positions under manager Eddie Howe after Steve Bruce's departure.

Willock was a late substitute during Thursday night's defeat at Liverpool, but has otherwise partnered Jonjo Shelvey in a two-man midfield under Howe.

It is a change from the system which saw the former loanee afforded licence to roam forward under Steve Bruce last season, but it is a position which the new head coach has sold to the former England youth international.

Willock said: "To be honest, I'm playing a bit deeper than I would have last year, I'm playing as one of two holders. It's a bit harder for me to get further ahead, I have a lot more defensive duties.

"That's something the manager has put to me, and he's explained to me why he's playing me there and it's really good to be honest.

"I really trust the manager, so I'm just trying to do my job, work every day and learn. Hopefully when one [goal] goes in, many will follow."
