Kota Kinabalu: Some 100 people were made homeless when a fire destroyed 20 of 180 squatter houses behind SJKC Che Hwa Kolombong, here, Friday afternoon.

Lintas Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said they received an emergency call at 4.10pm via the station line and rushed 12 firefighters along with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) to the location.

She said the operation was led by Senior Officer (PBK II) Laupen Nuar and also assisting were BBP Kota Kinabalu with 20 firefighters and a FRT and an EMRS and BBP Penampang with 20 firefighters and a Light FRT.

“According to the operation commander, the fire involved squatter houses of the non-permanent type with an estimated fire area of 200 x 300 square feet.

“The extinguishing operation used two 300-foot streams of four water fountains from machinery tanks and water tankers,” she said.

Agustavia said a male victim who suffered shortness of breath was given initial treatment by the EMRS before being sent to the hospital.

The operation ended at 7.55pm, she said.
